We started in 2005, when Olli-Pekka Piira, MD and cardiology specialist, together with his colleagues, realised that Oulu needed a medical centre specialising in the treatment of heart disease.
From the very beginning, our policy has been that heart patients need to be able to get to a competent doctor quickly and easily.

Preventing heart disease
It is important for us to take preventive care of the heart, as heart disease remains a major cause of death in Finland. Proactive heart health is vital.
“When you take care of your heart, you can avoid everything between life and losing your zest for life,” says Timo Mäkikallio, a cardiologist who has worked with heart patients for 25 years.
Many people wait too long with their heart problems. People often seek help only when their heart disease has reached a serious stage.
Almost every week, Mäkikallio encounters a situation where proactive heart health could have avoided serious consequences, even death.
“In Finland, the general rule is that people come for treatment when they either have obvious cardiac symptoms or have already had an adverse cardiac event,” says Mäkikallio.
