Coronary angioplasty
Angioplasty aims to open up blockages or stenoses that have already formed in the coronary arteries and are causing life-threatening symptoms despite medical treatment. The procedure always starts with an angiogram to identify the stenoses and their severity. In angioplasty, a balloon catheter is inserted into the artery and expanded at the site of the blockage by applying pressure to press the blockage against the vein wall and open the vein. A mesh tube, or stent, is usually inserted at the same time to ensure that the vein stays open. After the operation, the blood flow in the dilated artery returns to normal and the symptoms caused by the blockage disappear.
Angioplasty operations at the Helsinki office of the Sydänkeskus are always carried out by prior appointment. The procedure takes about 30–60 minutes and the post-procedure follow-up is a few hours. Sick leave after the procedure is about one week.
How do I apply for an examination?
At the Sydänkeskus Helsinki, angiography and angioplasty are performed. At the cardiologist’s surgery, a doctor specialising in heart disease will assess the need for examination and, if necessary, write a referral for further investigations.
Freedom of choice in specialised healthcare allows you to have an examination in the public hospital of your choice where the examination or procedure is carried out. You decide with your doctor where to refer you. Our customers can visit Sydänkeskus Helsinki as private customers or, for example, with an insurance commitment or through the public health system, e.g. with a service voucher from HUS.
