Coronary angiography (angiography of the coronary arteries)
In coronary artery disease, fat deposits develop in the coronary arteries that run along the surface of the heart, over time narrowing the vein so that blood cannot flow normally to the heart muscle. As the blood flow is impeded, the heart begins to suffer from a lack of oxygen in stressful situations such as exercise. The lack of oxygen to the heart causes the symptoms of coronary artery disease. A blockage can also occur suddenly, leading to an acute, life-threatening attack, known as a myocardial infarction, in which case treatment should be sought quickly. Coronary artery disease is a chronic disease that can be kept in good control with good preventive care and its progression can be slowed with medication.
Coronary angiography can accurately determine the structure and possible narrowing of the coronary arteries that run along the surface of the heart and supply blood to the myocardium. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia from a wrist or groin artery while the patient is awake. A thin catheter is inserted into the artery and an iodine-containing contrast agent is injected into the coronary arteries. At the same time, the coronary arteries filled with the contrast medium are imaged from several directions using X-rays.
Coronary angiography is mainly performed in patients with suspected significant coronary artery stenosis. Angiography is used to assess whether the patient would benefit from angioplasty or possibly bypass surgery. Often angioplasty can be performed at the time of imaging. The doctor will always discuss this with you before proceeding with the procedure.
How do I apply for an examination?
At the Sydänkeskus Helsinki, angiography and angioplasty are performed. At the cardiologist’s surgery, a doctor specialising in heart disease will assess the need for examination and, if necessary, write a referral for further investigations. The angiograms performed at the Sydänkeskus are non-urgent and by appointment.
Freedom of choice in specialised healthcare allows you to have an examination in the public hospital of your choice where the examination or procedure is carried out. You decide with your doctor where to refer you. Our customers can visit Sydänkeskus Helsinki as private customers or, for example, with an insurance commitment or through the public health system, e.g. with a service voucher from HUS.
