Iron infusion

Iron infusion, or intravenous iron therapy, can be given if a medically proven iron deficiency has not been corrected by other means. In iron infusion, iron is administered by an intravenous drip directly into the vein.

Iron infusion is used to treat iron deficiency when:

• iron deficiency does not start to resolve despite adequate oral iron intake
• oral iron supplements cannot be used, for example because they cause serious side effects
• if the symptoms of iron deficiency are severe or a rapid iron supplementation is necessary in the opinion of the doctor

For iron infusion you will need:

• a doctor’s referral for iron infusion
• a prescription for an iron supplement bought from a pharmacy

Iron infusion treatments only at the Sydänkeskus Helsinki and the cost is 128 €.

Preparation for iron infusion

• Pick up your iron supplement from the pharmacy well in advance so that you have it with you on the day of the procedure.
• You can eat and drink normally before the infusion.
• The procedure takes about an hour. We will monitor your condition during and after the procedure before you are discharged.
• There are no restrictions after the operation.

Follow-up care according to the referring doctor’s instructions and plan.
