Daily monitoring of blood pressure

Daily blood pressure recording provides a 24-hour picture of blood pressure.

A blood pressure cuff is attached to your arm. A small recording device attached to your waist takes care of measuring your blood pressure and recording the data – even while you sleep. The data provides a comprehensive picture of how your blood pressure behaves at different times of the day and in different situations.

High blood pressure puts strain on arteries and the heart

Unless your blood pressure has risen to an abnormally high level, you will not usually feel anything. This is why blood pressure is often measured either in a doctor’s or nurse’s office or monitored at home with your own blood pressure monitor.

Prolonged high blood pressure puts a strain on the arteries and heart. It can lead to arterial disease, which is a major risk factor for heart attack or stroke.

Daily blood pressure monitoring gives you a reliable idea of your blood pressure level in a short time, without the so-called white coat syndrome, i.e. abnormal readings caused by stress.

At your appointment, your cardiologist will review the measurements recorded by the device and discuss the results of the examination and, if necessary, your treatment plan with you.

How daily blood pressure monitoring is done

With daily blood pressure monitoring, you carry a portable recorder in your belt pouch around the clock, which measures your pressure at regular intervals. The cuff of the blood pressure monitor is squeezed from your upper arm, usually every 30 minutes during the day and every hour at night. The measurement intervals are tailored to the circadian rhythm.

The measuring arm is usually the non-dominant hand. A cuff is fitted around the upper arm and connected by a cable to the recording device. The device is not suitable for measuring blood pressure during exercise; the arm should be relaxed and straight at the time of measurement. The device should be carried in a belt pouch where it causes as little inconvenience as possible.

The electrical appliance is susceptible to damage, so do not drop, wet or otherwise abuse it.

When to have blood pressure tests

Reasons for annual blood pressure monitoring may include the following:

  • finding the optimal blood pressure medication
  • checking the effectiveness of antihypertensive medication in unstable hypertension
  • dizziness and weakness associated with changes in posture
  • night-time increase in blood pressure
  • causes of hypertension in older people
  • hypertension during pregnancy
  • white coat syndrome, when blood pressure is suspected to rise only in the presence of a doctor or nurse
